Day 2 of two-day lecture series with Dr Philipp Nothaft on the history of pre-modern cosmology

Friday, 22 May 2026, 1pm to 4pm

This short lecture series explores the history of pre-modern cosmology — the study of the ordered structure of the world before the rise of modern science. The talks trace how thinkers from antiquity to the sixteenth century understood the earth, the heavens, and everything in between. They aim to challenge popular misconceptions and reveal how much less we know about ancient and medieval views of the universe than we think.

This is a two-day series (21-22 May) with two lectures per day. The first lecture begins at 1:00pm and finishes at 2:00pm. This is followed by a short break for refreshments served in the Hovenden Room. The second lecture begins at 2:30pm and finishes at 3:30pm. There will be time at the end for questions and discussion. The second day of the series follows the same schedule (1-2pm; 2:30pm-3:30pm).
