Workshop on AI-powered tools for less commonly taught language teaching and learning with Dominik Lukes.

AI has become synonymous with chatbots that answer our questions and help us write texts. But a more important shift is happening with agentic AI which can both make tools and use them. This is especially important for all languages other than English, where digital support is generally weaker and language models less reliable. As a tool maker, AI can help teachers, students, and researchers create small applications for practice, explanation, exploration and feedback without any software development skills. As a tool user, AI can work with existing digital tools, texts, corpora, dictionaries and other resources on our behalf. In this workshop, we will look at practical examples of AI in both of these roles


The workshop will be followed by a Q&A session and refreshments.

About the speaker:
Dominik Lukes is an AI Consultant at the University of Oxford's AI Competency Centre and Oxford e-Research Centre. His background is in cognitive linguistics, language teaching, educational technology and accessibility. He runs Czechly.com, a website dedicated to Czech as a foreign language and has worked with Peace Corps language teachers in languages ranging from Russian and Albanian to Kazakh, Tetun, Arabic and Runyankore. He currently supports staff and students across Oxford in practical applications of generative AI, with a particular focus on its use as a research tool. He is also a founding member of the Association of AI Ethnographers. He shares his work on his website: https://metakermit.com.
