DESCRIPTION:David Sansom is Professor of Transplant Immunology based at th
e University College London (UCL) Institute for Infection\, Immunity and T
ransplantation in London. He obtained his BSc and PhD in Bristol\, UK wher
e he worked on HLA susceptibility to autoimmunity\, particularly in rheuma
toid arthritis. He has held various positions at the University of Bath\,
University of Birmingham and latterly at UCL. \nDavid has expertise in hum
an T cell biology especially in the areas of T cell costimulation\, immune
regulation and Treg biology. His lab has a particular focus on understand
ing the molecular and cellular biology that regulates the CTLA-4 immune ch
eckpoint and its interactions with the PD-1 pathway. David’s lab discove
red the molecular mechanism of CTLA-4 function termed “transendocytosis
” which provides a model for CTLA-4 as an effector molecule on regulator
y T cells. He has been involved in the study of gene mutations in patients
with CTLA-4 and LRBA deficiency\, who develop a variety of autoimmune con
ditions due to impaired regulatory T cell function. Recently\, his lab ha
s identified key differences in the ligands CD80 and CD86 and how these in
fluence both CTLA-4 and PD-1 immune checkpoints.
