DESCRIPTION:Neely Swanson\nTitle: Literal or Sense for Sense: Problems wit
h translating Cajal\nAbstract: The shorter works of Ramón y Cajal had bee
n translated in the past\, but it was the advent of the personal computer
that facilitated the translation of his major work. Previous works had bee
n translated literally\, making them accurate but sterile. This was not wh
at Cajal himself intended and Swanson and Swanson took a different approac
h in their three translations: “New Ideas on the Structure of the Nervou
s System in Man and Vertebrates\,” “Histology of the Nervous System in
Man and Vertebrates” and finally\, “Advice for a Young Investigator.
”\n\nLarry Swanson\nDepartment of Biological Sciences\, University of So
uthern California\, Los Angeles\nTitle: A short history of connectomics fr
om Willis to Cajal and beyond\nAbstract: Attempts to provide a global mode
l of brain structure-function organization date back over 1500 years. Majo
r conceptual advances by Vesalius\, Willis\, Cajal and others will be revi
ewed\, and the latest approach based on connectomics will be introduced. T
his systematic strategy is based on adjacency matrices (connectomes)\, gra
 ph theory\, and cluster analysis.
