DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Forest is one of the world’s top biodiversity h
otspots\, a flagship of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration\, and the m
ost degraded Brazilian biome after more than five centuries of exploitatio
n. Its current situation combines both deforestation and forest regenerati
on simultaneously. This trajectory may lead either to its extinction or to
its becoming an example of how to reverse a long history of environmental
destruction.\n\nThe Atlantic Forest can become a nursery for nature-based
solutions\, helping to secure ecosystem services for the majority of Braz
il’s population and economy\, while also providing valuable lessons for
the Amazon and other tropical forests around the world in addressing the g
lobal climate and biodiversity crisis.\n\nBiography:Luís
Fernando Guedes Pinto is an agronomist and holds a PhD in Agronomy from t
he University of São Paulo. He is the Executive Director of Fundação SO
S Mata Atlântica and has worked for 30 years on studies\, dialogue\, and
solutions related to the sustainability of Brazilian agriculture and fores
t conservation. He has served on the boards of Brazilian and international
organizations such as the Sustainable Agriculture Network\, ISEAL Allianc
e\, the Instituto Floresta Tropical and IAMap. He is a professor at the Sc
hool of Conservation and Sustainability (ESCAS-IPÊ) and was a visiting re
searcher at the University of Oxford.\n\nThe Leverhulme Centre for Nature
Recovery and the Nature Network are interested in promoting a wide variety
of views and opinions on nature recovery from researchers and practitione
rs.\n\nThe views\, opinions and positions expressed within this lecture ar
e those of the author alone\, they do not purport to reflect the opinions
or views of the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery/Nature Network\, or
its researchers.
