DESCRIPTION:This will be a joint seminar between Professor Helen McShane a
nd Dr Jonathan Pugh.\n\nProfessor Helen McShane - Establishing Controlled
Human Infection Models for Old and New Pathogens - Controlled human infect
ion models\, where healthy participants consent to be deliberately exposed
to a pathogen under carefully controlled clinical conditions\, are invalu
able tools in vaccine R&D\, particularly for complex pathogens such as Myc
obacterium tuberculosis. Unlike most human challenge models which use viru
lent organisms\, it would not be ethical to deliberately infect healthy pa
rticipants with virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We have established a
human challenge model using BCG\, a live attenuated strain of Mycobacteri
um bovis that is licensed for human use. More recently we have established
a human challenge model for SARS CoV-2 which allows the identification of
immune correlates of protection. \n\nDr Jonathan Pugh - Ethical Considera
tions in Designing Human Challenge Studies - In my contribution to the sem
inar\, I will outline some of the ethical dimensions that should be taken
into account when aiming to design an ethical human challenge trial\, draw
ing on recent work in research ethics.
