DESCRIPTION:Python is one of the most popular programming languages for da
 ta science\, both in academia and industry. It is also a good entry progra
 mming language for anyone trying their hand at coding for the first time. 
 This gentle introduction to Python is aimed at all students or staff aroun
 d campus with little to no prior experience with Python or programming wan
 ting to take that first step.\n\nThe course will cover all the basics need
 ed to get future coders started on their journey. By the end of the sessio
 n\, you will have written your first bits of code and be ready to explore 
 what Python can do for your own data or personal projects.\n\nThe training
  is divided into two sessions:\n Session 1\, Monday 13 October 2026\, 9:00
  am – 11:00 am\, Register\n Session 2\, Thursday 15 October 2026\, 9:00 
 am – 11:00 am\, Register\nThis will be an interactive session where part
 icipants will be expected to follow along with the demonstration\, coding 
 throughout the session.\n\nTopics to be covered:\n -Why use Python?\n -Dat
 a types and data structures in Python.\n -Conditional statements and loops
 .\n -Writing flexible functions.\n -Reading and writing to files.\n -Putti
 ng it altogether in a simple bit of code.\n\nIntended Audience:\n Staff an
 d students with little to no prior experience with Python or programming i
 n general.\n\nObjectives:\n -Become more comfortable with Python and progr
 amming in general.\n -Have a basic understanding of the main data types an
 d structures in Python.\n -Have a basic understanding of error messages an
 d how to resolve them.\n -Write some code to automate the resolution of a 
 small problem.\n -Be able to write a short bit of code to extract or write
  information from a file.\n -Learn how to break a bigger problem into smal
 ler problems through divide and conquer approach.\n -Know where to find ad
 ditional information on Python.\n\nRequirements:\nParticipants are expecte
 d to bring their own laptops so they can follow along with the interactive
  session.\n\nPre-course work:\nNone. There will be a small challenge in be
 tween the two sessions for participants to attempt.\n\nSoftware required:\
 nPython with Python IDLE or similar
