DESCRIPTION:We are in the middle of a global pandemic of obesity. It is wi
 dely acknowledged that obesity is an issue of dysregulated energy balance:
  we eat too much\, expend too little\, or both. It is now widely considere
 d that the major issue lies on the intake side of the equation. But what p
 articular aspects of food drive us to overconsume? Low protein\, high fat 
 and high carbohydrates have all been proposed as candidates.  This present
 ation will evaluate these different ideas using a combination of work in m
 ice and humans. We will discover a uniquely fattening combination of macro
 nutrients that seems important in making us fat. Perhaps more interesting 
 we will also discover a combination that makes us thin!\n\nSPEAKER BIOGRAP
 HY\n\nJohn Speakman runs two research laboratories: one in Aberdeen in Sco
 tland\, and the other at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenzhen in Ch
 ina. His main interest is in the drivers of energy balance and their impli
 cations for obesity and ageing. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Society and
  Academy of medical sciences\,  a foreign member of the US National Academ
 y of Sciences and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Fewer
  than 30 scientists worldwide have been elected to all 3 of these academie
 s.
