DESCRIPTION:Free event and open to all. Registration required\, limited pl
aces available. Please follow the link below to register.\n\nData/Culture\
, the Centre for Digital Scholarship (Bodleian Libraries)\, Digital Schola
rship @Oxford\, and Mapping the Arts and Humanities (SAS\, London) are hos
ting a two-day thematic research event exploring new ways of working with
images\, objects\, and performances. The event focuses on developing resea
rch questions and approaches\, using existing tools and resources. Partici
pants will work collaboratively in small groups\, supported by Research So
ftware Engineers\, and have the opportunity to develop a research idea fur
ther through a prize of dedicated technical collaboration. No prior coding
experience is required.\n\nWhat is a ScholarTHON?\nThis pilot event explo
res a collaborative\, research-led adaptation of the increasingly widespre
ad hackathon format - originally developed in Computer Science as an inten
sive and collaborative way of working - for Arts and Humanities contexts.\
nA hackathon is typically a short\, intensive and collaborative event in w
hich participants work together in groups to solve computational challenge
 s. This event builds on that format but shifts the focus towards research
questions\, placing Arts and Humanities scholars and their specific needs
and expertise at the centre.\nIt brings Arts and Humanities researchers to
gether with existing open-source tools and embedded Research Software Engi
neers to explore feasible and reusable approaches to visual search and ima
ge comparison across Arts and Humanities research contexts.\nThe event ret
ains a competitive element\, drawing on the hackathon format\, but reorien
ts it towards research impact. Awards will be given for the most compellin
g research question and the most reusable and scalable approach.\nThe winn
ing group will receive 10 hours of dedicated collaboration with a Research
Software Engineer. This will support the further development or adaptatio
n of tools in line with the research project\, helping to move from initia
l ideas to sustainable research outputs and supporting the development of
collaborative grant applications across disciplines and sectors.\n\nConcep
tual Framework\nThis model addresses fragmented expertise\, uneven access
to technical skills\, the underuse of existing datasets and tools\, and we
ak pathways from experimentation to sustainable outputs.\nDuring the cours
e of the ScholarTHON\, participants will be introduced to current research
initiatives that are already working to address these challenges\, includ
ing Data/Culture\, Mapping the Arts and Humanities\, and the Open-Source I
nitiative at Digital Scholarship @Oxford. These projects demonstrate how d
atasets\, software\, and research communities can be connected and sustain
ed through practices of reuse\, collaboration\, and shared development.\nB
 y aligning research questions\, skills\, tools\, and collaboration\, the S
cholarTHON operates as a small-scale knowledge ecosystem that supports str
onger and more fundable projects\, improves the reuse of digital resources
\, and models more sustainable research infrastructure practices.\n\nWhat
will happen?\nThis event focuses on computational approaches to visual and
material culture to explore how images\, objects\, and performances can b
e studied using open-source tools and frameworks.\nParticipants will compl
ete a short MS Form in advance of the event outlining their research inter
ests\, questions\, and \,where possible\, datasets or collections they wis
h to work with. This will help us identify needs\, refine research questio
ns\, and organise groups ahead of the programme.\n\nOver the two days\, pa
 rticipants will:\nexplore a curated selection of open-source tools (e.g. V
ISE\, WISE\, Image Compare)\nlearn how to navigate and assess open-source
resources\, including GitHub repositories\nexamine how these tools have be
en used in existing research projects\nwork in small interdisciplinary gro
ups\, each supported by an embedded Research Software Engineer\ndevelop a
conceptual prototype: a structured proposal outlining how tools and datase
ts could be used to address a research question\nThe outcome is not a fini
shed digital product\, but a clear\, realistic research approach\, includi
ng workflows\, methods\, and next steps that can inform the future of the
project and its applications. The full programme and MS form will be share
d with participants at the sign-up stage.\n\nWho is this for?\nThis event
is designed for:\nArts and Humanities researchers (scholars and postgradua
 te students)\nthose working with images\, objects\, archives\, or performa
nce materials\nthose interested in exploring new research methods\nthose d
eveloping or planning research projects or grant applications\n\nWhat do y
ou need?\nAn interest in your research question\n(Optional) a dataset or c
ollection you work with\nA laptop is desirable but not essential\n\nYou do
  NOT need:\ncoding experience\nprior knowledge of tools\ntechnical experti
