DESCRIPTION:Invasive meningococcal disease\, including meningococcal menin
gitis\, has been a much-feared infection for at least 200 years\, often as
sociated with unpredictable outbreaks. Over the past 40 years\, vaccinati
on and changes in human behaviour have reduced its incidence in many count
ries including the UK\; however\, as the Kent outbreak in March 2026 showe
d\, it still has the capacity to surprise and concern us. This lecture wi
ll explore the\, apparently paradoxical\, natural history of the meningoco
ccus and how this helps us to understand and combat the disease it causes.
