DESCRIPTION:This short lecture series explores the history of pre-modern c
osmology — the study of the ordered structure of the world before the ri
se of modern science. The talks trace how thinkers from antiquity to the s
ixteenth century understood the earth\, the heavens\, and everything in be
tween. They aim to challenge popular misconceptions and reveal how much le
ss we know about ancient and medieval views of the universe than we think.
\n\nThis is a two-day series (21-22 May) with two lectures per day. The fi
rst lecture begins at 1:00pm and finishes at 2:00pm. This is followed by a
short break for refreshments served in the Hovenden Room. The second lect
ure begins at 2:30pm and finishes at 3:30pm. There will be time at the end
for questions and discussion. The second day of the series follows the sa
me schedule (1-2pm\; 2:30pm-3:30pm).\n\nOrganised by the Pharos Foundation
