DESCRIPTION:The workshop explores how and why languages were taught\, lear
ned\, and sustained across the diverse and shifting socio-cultural landsca
pes of the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean. Integrating histo
ry with historical sociolinguistics and adopting a comparative and cross-d
isciplinary perspective\, the workshop aims to identify shared trends\, co
mparable elements\, and distinctive features in language learning and tran
smission. This approach offers a renewed perspective on the interconnected
  Mediterranean world — a region where multilingualism\, mobility\, and i
ntercultural exchange were and are central to daily life. The impact of th
ese dynamics on language teaching\, preservation\, and use has often been
underestimated.\n\nThe event will include dedicated time for discussion an
d reflection\, allowing participants to engage in a broader conversation a
bout language and cultural transmission. At its core\, the workshop presen
ts the medieval and early modern Mediterranean as a space of teaching\, le
arning\, and multilingual exchange. This year\, we will focus on Greek and
Armenian.\n\nPlease see the programme brochure for more information. To r
egister for online attendance\, please contact Ugo Mondini at ugo.mondini@
mod-langs.ox.ac.uk\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Ballio
 l Interdisciplinary Institute\, MGSA\, NAASR\, OCBR\, and TORCH.
