DESCRIPTION:These events serve as a poignant celebration on the eve of Ref
ugee Week which in 2026 centers on the global theme of "Courage".\n\nJoin
us at 2pm for a performance of Cecilia McDowall's 'Everyday Wonders: The G
irl From Aleppo' at St Barnabas Church\, Jericho. Join us at 5pm at Worces
ter College for a conversation between McDowall\, Kevin Crossley-Holland\,
and Nujeen Mustafa whose story inspired the piece.\n\nNujeen Mustafa is a
Syrian refugee\, youth advocate\, and champion for children with disabili
ties for the UN Refugee Agency. At just sixteen years old\, Nujeen made th
e 3\,500-mile journey from Syria to Germany in a steel wheelchair. Born wi
th cerebral palsy\, she spent the majority of her life confined to her apa
rtment in Aleppo\, where she taught herself English by watching television
. As war broke out\, Nujeen and her family were forced to flee—first to
her native Kobane\, then to Turkey. Because her family could not afford fo
r everyone to make it to safety in Germany where her brother lived\, her p
arents stayed behind in Turkey. In 2015\, Nujeen set out with her sister a
cross the Mediterranean\, braving inconceivable odds for the chance at a n
 ormal life and an education.
