With artist Nigel Caple\n\nIn this talk\, Nigel Caple will examine some of
the artists who have left visual records of Japan's famous Tokaido Road.\
n\nParticular focus will be given to Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and his
celebrated woodblock print series the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido
Road\, which includes his inspired vision of Shono Hakuu - this masterful
scene depicts the fleeting moments in nature when travellers on the open
road are caught in a sudden rainstorm.\n\nThe history and development of t
he Tokaido highway will be woven together by various stories from over fou
r centuries of travel. Well-known incidents that have taken place along th
