Dr Luke Allen on AI Clinical decision support in general practice: highways to hell and stairways to heaven

​Clinical decision support systems are arguably the most transformational aspect of the introduction of AI into primary care. Luke’s talk will introduce what these systems are, how they, work, and how they are set to change the practice of medicine. Luke will also present findings from a multi-stakeholder future casting workshop, along with ten recommended actions to bend the UK’s digital trajectory toward the divine.

Luke is a GP who co-directs the Global Primary Care & Future Health Systems team at Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, along with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Primary Health Care. His health systems and health policy research explores new AI-enabled models of care delivery, focusing on clinical decision support tools that assist GPs with reaching diagnoses and selecting appropriate investigations and treatments. Trained at Harvard and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, he has been appointed to chair the new Lancet Primary Care Workforce Commission, which will explore how AI can be responsibly integrated into primary care at scale, drawing on analogies from high-stakes industries including aviation, nuclear power, autonomous weapons, and algorithmic trading to develop governance and safety frameworks. Luke advises ministries of health around the world on health sector reform, and has worked as a senior consultant to the World Health Organisation and World Bank.
