We are looking forward to hearing from Martin Maiden, Professor of Molecular Epidemiology, University of Oxford

Friday, 10 July 2026, 9.30am to 10.30am

Invasive meningococcal disease, including meningococcal meningitis, has been a much-feared infection for at least 200 years, often associated with unpredictable outbreaks. Over the past 40 years, vaccination and changes in human behaviour have reduced its incidence in many countries including the UK; however, as the Kent outbreak in March 2026 showed, it still has the capacity to surprise and concern us. This lecture will explore the, apparently paradoxical, natural history of the meningococcus and how this helps us to understand and combat the disease it causes.
