Join Timothy for this exclusive visit to the New Douce Print Room, exploring the works of William Turner 'of Oxford'.
Born just four years after his celebrated namesake J.M.W. Turner, William Turner ‘of Oxford’ lived most of his life in the great man’s shadow. Both were landscape painters, but the local man’s art was no pale imitation of the other’s.
Having grown up in the Oxfordshire countryside, Turner ‘of Oxford’ understood that landscape was not an unchanging constant, but a dynamic expression of the lives of the often humble workers who populated it.
His concern for physical and social change, from the North of Scotland to the Isle of Wight, is evident from the Ashmolean’s rich collections of his drawings and watercolours.
