In this talk, Nigel Caple will examine some of the artists who have left visual records of Japan's famous Tokaido Road.
Particular focus will be given to Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and his celebrated woodblock print series the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road, which includes his inspired vision of Shono Hakuu - this masterful scene depicts the fleeting moments in nature when travellers on the open road are caught in a sudden rainstorm.
The history and development of the Tokaido highway will be woven together by various stories from over four centuries of travel. Well-known incidents that have taken place along the route will be pursued to illustrate the realities of the journey itself and the nature that surrounds it.
